We strongly discourage the use of individual hired caregivers due to recurring issues of: theft; lack of bonding to cover missing articles; lack of worker’s compensation to cover injuries if the worker should fall in your home [your homeowners insurance would not cover this]; withholding and Social Security tax issues; sequestering of the elderly person from the family; and alienation of family members. Payments made to “cash” create severe Medicaid eligibility issues once a Nursing Home is needed. Paying someone “off the books” is also illegal.
